California racer Butch Leal was always a contender and a crowd favorite. He was young and handsome so they called him "The California Flash." Leal would later go on to race a series of A/FX, Super Stock, and Pro Stock cars. His Thunderbolt was an unusual and interesting machine. Ford had a very aggressive racing program in the 1960s. The Thunderbolt started out as a bread and butter Fairlane and was treated to nearly every performance part that Ford had at the time. Called "Thunderbolt" after the awesome fighter plane from WWII, the small 427 powered machine was a terror at the drag strip and lived up to its name.
