Having built lots of race cars, Carroll Shelby knew what to do to take the Mustang’s “Falcon platform” and make it into a genuine racer. He knew what to take out and what to put it. The end result was an instant legend. As if the Corvettes had enough to deal with trying to catch the 427 Cobras, now they had Shelby Mustangs closing in on their rears.

The ‘65 model of the Shelby Mustang can be identified by the lack of the extra rear side windows as seen on the ‘66 Shelby Mustang, but not the production Mustangs. It actually served a a very functional part of the car. The extra side window opened up a large, rear-view blind-spot for the race car
driver. Told ya that Shelby knew what to put in and what to take out.

Shouldn't you be wearing one of these???

Before muscle cars and pony cars took over, the hot street machines were usually the big cars because you could easily get a BIG engine for a BIG car. NASCAR racing had the full attention of Ford and Chrysler in the early ‘60 (GM had a back-door effort with the Super Duty Pontiacs). Some of the attraction to the cars in those day was that they were loud, fast, and “stock!” When you look at what they raced back then it’s amazing how simple the cars look. You could actually see a “real” car in there. And since manufacturers had to sell what they raced, if you saw it on the track, you could buy a street version at your local dealership (can’t do that now).

After pony cars and muscle cars took over everyone’s interest, a big Galaxie or Impala is what you “might” be able to get Dad to buy if he’s in the right mood.

Ford was very close to starting the whole muscle car thing. While John DeLorean was focused on putting hot engines into mid-size cars, Ford was stuffing their NASCAR 427 engines into Fairlanes and Comets. They called the Fairlane version the “Thunderbolt.” The Comet version was called the “Cyclone.”

The lightweight setup with the heavy hitter 427 NASCAR engine was a natural for Super Stock class racing with hundreds stepping into the staging lanes. Names like Gas Ronda, Butch Leal, Phill Bonner, Tasca Ford, and Turner Ford were on the sides of winning Thunderbolts drag cars. Some of the Thunderbolts drifted into the ranks of the new A/Factory experimental cars. But after the Mustang arrived, that was the end of the hot Ford Thunderbolts.
