The Kit Car Profile Series was started in the Spring of '99 at the request of editor Mike Blake.

I had been working with Mike for a few years when he was an assistant editor at "Vette Magazine." Mike enjoyed my "Illustrated Corvette Series" and asked if I'd be interested in doing a similar series for "Kit Car Illustrated." That was three years and over 20 installments ago and we're still going strong every other month.

The cool thing about kit cars, (or "replicars" as some call them) is that for a fraction of the cost of the real thing, you can build your own, or purchase a turn-key replicar. Some kits cars are almost impossible to tell from the real item, particularly the Cobra replicars. You have to do what I call the "fingernail test." You lightly tap on the body. If it's fiberglass, you hear it right away.

There are kit versions of famous cars that are so valiable that you wouldn't want to take htem out in traffic.

It's a fasinating hobbie with almost unlimited possibilities.

The Kit Car Profile Series website will be up and running by the end of June '02. Here's the address...
