It was as if the designers or marketing forgot what made the Mustang a success in the first place. It wasn’t the size issue. By 1971 the Mustang was developing a serious weight problem. The styling update was okay with the almost flat fastback, but a little odd with the coupe version. The styling ran out to 1973, but because the weight piled on and the horsepower dropped off, the car felt very paunchy. Ford’s solution to the problem is one that many would soon forget, the Pinto-based Mustang II. They still didn’t know what the original formula was.
