Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen had a good run in the mid-’80s with his Coors sponsored Corvette Funny Car. But as the recession set in during the late ‘80s, Coors decided to spend its advertising money on something besides drag racing, thus leaving the Mongoose without a sponsor. Ever the showman, McEwen decided to have a ‘57 Chevy styled body made for his funny car chassis and took his new show on the road. The end result was simply stunning! The bright red funny car had beautiful airbrush rendered bumpers, headlights, and grill by Kenny Youngblood. McEwen promoted the car as “The World’s Fastest 1957 Chevy” and ran exhibitions at tracks all over the country. Unfortunately, the Mongoose was never able to land a major sponsor for the car. This rendition of the car shows how it “could” have looked had McEwen chosen to have his classic “Mongoose” cartoon character painted on the car. In case you might be wondering how quick and fast McEwen’s ‘57 Chevy was, his best run on the car was 4.72 seconds with a top speed of 265 mph.!
