Thanks to Don Prudhomme's unique association with Mattel Toys, his "Hot Wheels" funny cars were arguably his most well known and remembered race cars. The story goes that Don's friend Tom McEwen knew someone at Mattel Toys who worked in the R&D department. The Tom and Don pitched an idea for a sponsorship that would be tied in with Mattel's Hot Wheels die-cars toys. A deal was struck, and the rest is drag racing history. McEwen and Prudhomme played their "Snake" and "Mongoose" nicknames off of each other and would often do radio interviews before match races to stoke the fans for Wednesday or Saturday night racing. It worked for years until Mattel moved on to other toy themes.
