Corvette Engines: 1997 LS1 New Generation Small-Block
Print No. ENG-11
Not since the Corvette first arrived in 1953 have we seen such a completely new Corvette. Everything was new - the body shape, interior, chassis, suspension, wheels, tires,. and especially the engine. The new LS1 small-block had almost nothing in common with any other small-block Chevrolet ever made, except for the fact that it is still a push rod, 350cid Chevy.
Horsepower was up to 345 @ 6,000rpm and torque up to 350lb.-ft. @4,400rpm. Thats only 30 horsepower less than the ZR-1. Another interesting feature of the new LS1 is that, like the 1969 ZL-1 427 engine, the LS1 is all-aluminum (and its not a $3,000 option!).
If you compare the 345 net horsepower and estimate the gross power figure, you are probably looking at somewhere around 435 to 450 horsepower - just like in the good old days of 1967!

What's under the hood has always been of prime importance for Corvette lovers. So much so that some Corvette engines have become legends in their own right.
