Chevrolet had been playing around with a new engine in the NASCAR arena since 1963. When the new Mark IV engine was first shown in the 1965 Corvette, it looked as if it had been installed with a shoehorn!
The massive big-block took horsepower and torque to a whole new level. Racers of all kinds benefited from the new design. Very quickly, big-block Chevy engines were showing up in road racing Corvettes, and drag racing Chevys. Top Fuel drag racer Jim Butcher actually set the NHRA Top Fuel et record with a big-block Chevy!
The 396 option in the 1965 Corvette would set you back 538.00.
