Thanks to Grumpy Jenkins' '72 tube framed Vega, Pro Stock cars got expensive to build and race as fast as et's were dropping. Many racers simply couldn't compete or felt that the class was rapidly getting away from what it started out to be.

Butch Leal, "The California Flash" had raced an awesome tube chassised Plymouth in '73, then stunned everyone with a super clean 1965 Hemi Belvedere Super Stocker! Butch used his Pro Stock skills and was able to run nearly a half second under the SS/B class record.

California racer Butch Leal was always a contender and a crowd favorite. He was young and handsome so they called him "The California Flash." Leal would later go on to race a series of A/FX, Super Stock, and Pro Stock cars.

His Thunderbolt was an unusual and interesting machine. Ford had an aggressive racing program in the '60. The Thunderbolt started out as a bread and butter Fairlane and was treated to nearly every performance part that Ford had at the time.

Called "Thunderbolt" after the awesome fighter plane from WWII, the small 427 powered machine was a terror at the drag strip.

In 1967 Danny and Wayne Jesel and their friend Tony Massari built a killer Junior Stock ‘56 Chevy sedan Delivery car. Using a 283 Corvette engine and a 2-speed Powerglide, the car was a solid 13.5-second Stock Eliminator contender.

Tony’s dad was on the board of directors of the Yoo Hoo Chocolate Drink Company. The guys wondered if Yoo Hoo would be interested in sponsoring their race car. Mr. Massari said that the guys would first have to show the board of directors demographics, facts, figures, projections... you know, a business plan. So they gathered their info, put on their suits, and made their pitch.

The board was impressed and gave the guys $2,500 and all the Yoo Hoo Chocolate Drink they could pass out at the drags for free. In 1967, a non-automotive company sponsoring a drag car was unheard of. The extra cash helped their cause and by the end of the year, the team held the NHRA National Record.

1968 Cobra Jet Super Stocker

Ford did something at the ‘68 Winternations that was spectacular, yet really torqued up a lot of Super Stock and Stock class racers. Anticipating a strong challenge from the 396 Camaros, Ford built a team of factory prepared, spend as much as needed, engineer team managed, racing versions of the hot new Cobra Jet option.

The team arrived using a standard open car transport. The 8 racers were all prepared by Moody-Stroppe race car builders. The team Mustangs blasted national records and cleaned up in the Stock and Super Stock classes. The Super Stock Eliminator final turned out to be an all-Ford match with Al Joniac against Hubert Platt. Joniac’s car was a SS/E car and Platt’s Mustang was a SS/CA car. Joniac was so jazzed about being in the final he nearly ran under the record, which would have disqualified him. A Ford rep at the finish line was waving his arms, signaling Joniac to slow down. As it was, Al won the race with a 12.50 @97.93 mph. Earlier, he had been running 11.5 @ 120 mph.

Eventually, “brake-outs” and loosing for running too fast, moved the top guys to petition NHRA for create Pro Stock in 1970.
