When "Dyno Don" Nicholson showed up with this one-piece, flip-top fiberglass car in 1967, everyone was stunned! Don's factory supported Mercury bodied, Ford powered funny car trumped everyone.
The story goes that Ronnie Sox asked Don, "Did you know this car was going to look like this before you got it?" Within months, nearly EVERYONE in the Funny Car ranks switched to the one-piece, flip-top design.

Don "The Shoe" Schumacher's
WONDER WAGON 1974 vega Funny Car
Print #FC-38

The following year, Lil John Buttera built a stunning replacement for the '73 Vega panel wagon. The body had air relief vents, fender bubbles and every aerodynamic trick Buttera could think of. The chassis and tin-work was outstanding. Schumacher's machine was THE car to beat and definitely raised the bar for funny car construction.

Thanks to Don Prudhomme's unique association with Mattel Toys, his "Hot Wheels" funny cars were arguably his most well known and remembered race cars.
The story goes that Don's friend Tom McEwen knew someone at Mattel Toys who worked in the R&D department and pitched an idea for a sponsorship that would be tied in with Mattel's Hot Wheels die-cars toys. A deal was struck, and the rest is drag racing history.
McEwen and Prudhomme played their "Snake" and "Mongoose" nicknames off of each other and would often do radio interviews before match races to stoke the fans for Wednesday or Saturday night racing. It worked for years until Mattel moved on to other toy themes.
