The Chevrolet Chevelle was becoming one of America’s most popular mid-sized cars by 1966. It was priced right and had great lines. The SS-396 option was Chevrolet’s answer to the Pontiac GTO.
Although based on the same platform, the GTO had a head start in image and status. Besides, the Chevelle didn’t have a hit song like the GTO’s “Lil GTO.”
