As mentioned on other pages, there was a new attitude inside Chevrolet concerning their participation in racing. General Motors had purchased Lotus and was using them as their racing R&D arm. Although there were no Corvette parts on the Corvette GTP cars, they still were called Corvettes. Two Corvette GTP cars were built based on a Lola T600 chassis. One using a V-8 engine and the other used a 1,000 horsepower, all-aluminum, 3.4-liter (209cid) V6 engine. The car won two IMSA races in 1986 and took the pole position in four races in 1987. Chevrolet also used the cars as test beds for possible active suspension, carbon fiber body and chassis parts, as well as a possible turbo V6 for production. An all-out active suspension is still far off and no one misses the turbo V6, considering how well the current C5-R 350 engines are doing.
