Chevrolet and GM had a real love-hate relationship with racing. On one hand GMs official policy was, WE DONT BUILD RACE CARS! But on the other hand, there were many back door racing efforts and Zora Arkus-Duntov was allowed to make off-road parts that racers just happened to put on their cars. Duntov was a Corvette racers best friend. The Chief of Corvette Engineering made sure that the average Joe could check off all the right stuff to get a good start on his or her Corvette racing effort. All Joe had to do was write the check. The L-88 option was the Corvette racers big gun. It was a stock 427/435 Corvette, minus the 3-2bbl carbs and a whole lot of other parts that a racer would have no use for - such as a radiator shroud, heater, radio, etc. Instead, Mr. Buyer got a solid-lifter, 500 horsepower beast with heavy-duty everything. L-88 powered Corvettes could easily hit 180mph on the long straights!
