The horsepower race was in full swing in Detroit and the old saying was true - theres no substitute for cubic-inches. Chevrolet introduced the 396 Mark IV engine in the Corvette in 1965. In 1966 Corvette blasted the GM rule about not offering engines over 400 cubic-inches. Besides, 427 just sounds better. Even though Zora Arkus-Duntov was thrilled with the big engine because of the extra weight, the new big-block Corvette was simply awesome.
