Bench Racing: Great Drag Racing Stories

"Bench Racing" - An activity indulged in, mainly by guys, of telling, retelling and embellishing stories that have to do with race cars or high performance street cars.

They usually start out with something like, "Back in '71 I have a worked over Hemi Dart and I was on Front Street and this young dude pulls up with a trailer Camaro with a tunnel ram sticking out of the hood, ya know? And this cracker wants to run title for title, ya know..." Or, it could start out like this. "Once I saw Grumpy at Atco in a match race with Sox. And Jenkins was doing his burnouts with the driver's door open!" Then Sox pulls into the bleach box and redlines his Hemi Cuda with the car going at a 45 degree angle..."

And so they go, zillions of stories.... some completely true, some stretched, and others made up. It's part of the fun of being a motor head. You can be at the office or in a bar and you're swapping stories and it's kind'a - sort'a like being at the track or like cruis'n and running the stop-light grand prix.

Grady Bryant, an early 1960s A/FX racer from Texas, wrote a wonderful book titled "Match Race Madness." The book is a charming collection of short stories of some of Grady's experiences on and off the track, as well as experiences of some of his friends and competitors. Reading "Match Race Madness" is what inspired me to create this section. We're going to start off with a few of my own experiences as a track announcer at Cecil County Drag-O-Way and as a contributing writer and artist.

Before we get started, you might want to go to the concession stand (your kitchen)... get some snacks and drinkeys... put your helmet on and buckle your seat belt... it's time to go BENCH RACING!!!
