Illustration Background:
In the mid to late ‘80s, the team of Reher & Morrison was on top of the Pro Stock game. Their Camaros had been consistent contenders for years. When Chevrolet came out with their new, mid-size car, the Beretta, the Reher & Morrison team had the first Pro Stock version to hit the strip.
Back then, I was creating two to three pen & ink illustrations for Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine every month and was always pitching ideas to the late editor, Steve Collison. What I originally had in mind was to create a series of “engineering-style” technical illustrations of a Top Fueler, a Funny Car, and a Pro Stocker. Steve thought it sounded cool (he was so easy...), but handed me a stack of photos and said, “Bud, I want you to do the new Reher & Morrison car!”
Many, many hours later, I delivered the completed illustration and Steve ran it as part of a special feature on Reher & Morrison’s new car. The “series” of technical illustrations fizzled out with SSDI, but Steve suggested pitching then idea to Popular Hot Rodding. That’s how the Thundercraft illustration came to be.
