Illustration Background:
After the Reher & Morrison and Thundercraft illustrations were published, I had a phone call from Norm Washington, of Econo Fuel Oil, in Washington DC. Norm explained that he had a Top Sportsman Firebird and that he wanted an illustration of his car, just like the Reher & Morrison piece he’s seen in Super Stock. I said, “Sure, no problem.” (Somebody STOP ME!!!)
Norm send photos of his car and I put ink in my Radid-O-Graph pens. Norm was so pleased with his illustration that he used the art on the back of his photo hand-out, AND I ended up making a second pen & ink illustration (same car), plus two color versions. For several months Norm kept calling me, asking for another. I even did a t-shirt for the team.
The last of the “engineering-style” technical illustrations happened in ‘93 when Rick Voeglin, of High Performance Communications ,commissioned me to do the cover art for Warren Johnson’s Pro Stock Olds Press Kit. The cover featured a front 3/4 view color reenering of the car, plus a side view only, technical illustration of Johnson’s Olds.
The original series concept never panned out. McEwen wasn’t able to get a major sponsor and eventually parked the red ‘57 Chevy funny car. Eddie Hill’s 4.99 (first into the 4s) dragster was overshadowed by Eddies multiple blow-overs. Then in ‘92 I went to work for Tyco Toys, as a toy designer.
